Clif Wegner, head coach of Clackamas Community College’s men’s basketball team, passed away July 22. He was 72 years old, and had worked at the college since 1993.

Wegner died peacefully on Tuesday morning, according to @clackamascougars on Instagram.

Before beginning his coaching career, Wegner obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in English studying at Western Oregon University from 1971-1976.

“Coach Wegner’s impact extended far beyond the basketball court,” said Jim Martineau, the Athletic Director for the college in the Instagram post. “He was an educator at his core, loved teaching and mentoring. His influence will live on in every life he touched.”

Wegner will be remembered fondly by his peer faculty and his athletes.

Wegner went on to pursue teaching in the 1970s, where he coached for Willamina High School and Oregon City High School. He taught English, and coached baseball, softball and basketball.

During his time at CCC, Wegner was the head coach of the men’s basketball team, and in his tenure, the Cougars won three NWAC championships in 2007, 2009, and 2010.
